20-year, glass-rested, single distilled raicilla made from Blue Weber agave is truly a rare opportunity.
We have the last major surplus of agave Tequilana (Blue Weber) at the end of the 20th century to thank for this rare treat. Planting was way ahead of growth, and in 1999 and 2000 fields were full of beautiful mature agave. At ½ a peso per kilo, it was not worth the effort and cost of harvesting—that’s if you could even find a buyer. In the Sierra Occidental of Jalisco (raicilla country) there were many farmers of agave Tequiliana that were supplying tequila producers. Don Guelo had a friend that offered him his surplus Tequiliana; all he had to do was harvest it before it was too late. Don Guelo had as much Blue Weber agave that he could handle at his little taberna and made around 5,000 liters of single distilled raicilla. However, in his region Maximiliana agave is king. Therefore sales of his Blue Weber were slow, which leads us to today and why La Venenosa has the good fortune to offer this 20-year rare beauty.
Raicillero (Distiller): Don Margarito "Don Guelo" Aguirre
Agave Source: La Estancia, Sierra Occidental
Agave: Blue Weber (Tequilana)
Cooking Method: Adobe oven fueled by black oak
Milling: By hand
Fermentation: Wild
Distillation: Single in stainless steel alembic
Tasting Notes: Azul has aromas of clay, sweet potato and pine tree. The palate shows wheat, honey, quince and a bit strange to say but oxidized wine characteristics. The texture is fresh and mineral with a long, slightly bitter finish.
