Vintage Notes by Vinous 2/2021: "Altare's 2017 Barolos are gorgeous, must-have wines for the year. The 2017s stand out for their exceptional balance, especially in the tannins, and that places them at the very top of the pack. Farming is meticulous, as it always is. According to Silvia Altare. 'The key to the vintage was picking early in order to maintain as much freshness as possible,' Silvia Altare told me. 'We did three passes in most vineyards so that we could capture a full spectrum of ripeness levels in the blends.' As always, the wines saw 3-4 days on the skins in rotary fermenters, while malolactic fermentation was done in steel. The Barolos were barreled down to French oak barriques in November for aging. Although the years pass, some things don't change, and that includes the very special wines that emerge from this small reference-point estate in La Morra."

Vineyard Notes: The Altare Barolo is a blend of various crus Altare farms in the villages of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, and Barolo. The vines range between 20 and 30 years old. Farming is organic. Silvia only uses copper and copper sulfate if strictly necessary. Organic cow manure from their mountain cows is used to fertilize the vines.

Vinification Notes: The Nebbiolo macerates on the skins for approximately 4-5 days in rotary fermenters with temperature control. The wine ages for 24 months in neutral French barriques. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast as does the malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined, filtered, or clarified. No substances that could modify the color or the structure of the wine is ever used.

The 2017 Barolo is absolutely impeccable and shows why Altare remains at the top of the pack. Silky, aromatic and alluring, the 2017 is exquisitely beautiful. It is a bit lighter in body than usual, but that is very much in keeping with the style of the year. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries and rose petal grace the silky finish. The straight Barolo isa blend of sites in La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Novello.
