Terroir Notes: The Carricante grapes grow on the eastern side of Mt. Etna in the commune of Milo at around 2,600 feet above sea level. Only the Etna Bianco produced in this region may be given the title of Superiore. Milo receives high rainfall and humidity with great temperature changes throughout the day. The Carricante vines are alberello trained, which means they are grown as freestanding bushes. The average vine age is 80 years. This indigenous grape is only cultivated on Etna.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes ripen late and are harvested around the third week of October. They are pressed into steel tanks for fermentation. The wine is left to mature for two years in tank on its fine lees before bottling. Refinement continues in bottle for 10-12 months.

Tasting Notes: Pietra Marina is one of the great white wines of Italy. The bouquet is rich with complexity. It showcases flint, salinity and minerality with hints of orange, lemon flower and apple. Dry on the palate, Pietra Marina has gorgeous acidity and persistence. Notes of anise and almond linger on the finish. This is a wine that will age beautifully.

From 80-year-old Carricante bush vines in Milo village at 750 meters. When young, it seems to have a margarita-like profile with notes of salty lime, a 'cola gelato' and apple character typical of Mount Etna, and a finish between marzipan and iodine. Long lees aging brings texture, and it shines with zesty acidity balancing white peach fruit. An exceptional match with spicy foods. Drink 2025-2035."

The 2016 Etna Bianco Superiore Pietra Marina is more of a whisper than a shout, but it has a lot to say, as its bouquet blossoms with aromas of young peach and mango, evolving further to reveal hints of sage, sugar-dusted almonds and white smoke. Like a veil of pure silk, this slips across the palate, nearly weightless yet stimulating all the same, as salty acids and minerals build tension toward the close, balanced by ripe stone fruits. It’s persistent yet juicy, swaying between savory and sweet, while leaving the senses completely refreshed and longing for more. The Pietra Marina is an old-vines selection of Carricante from the Rinazzo Contrada on Etna’s eastern slope. It refines for 24 months on the lees in stainless steel vats prior to bottling. Put some away for a few years in the cellar, and reap the rewards.
