Tasting Notes: The San Pietro Friulano expresses wildflowers and fine herbs. Hints of almond show on the finish, which leans on the persistent mineral tide.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested. Whole clusters are gently pressed in order to extract only the first and cleanest part of the must, which is immediately pumped to a stainless steel vat where most solids and heavy parts decant overnight. In the morning, the upper part is racked off the bottom to another stainless steel tank. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeast. The San Pietro Friulano matures on its fine lees for 6 months to avoid reductive effects and to gain the stabilization and anti-oxidative benefits that these natural components bring. The wine is bottled with a light filtration, meant only to eliminate the cloudiness brought by the floating lees. 30 mg/L of SO2 are added. The total SO2 is 50 mg/L.
91pts (2019 Vintage) Vinous 1/26/2021
"The 2019 Friulano San Pietro wafts up with mineral-laced floral and herbal tones before giving way to notes of fresh sliced apple. It’s a deeply textural, youthfully dense wine that mixes ripe orchard fruits with subtle citrus and spice to create a soothing yet tactile impression on the palate. This seems to go on for over a minute before its inner perfumes taper off. The San Pietro hails from seventy-year-old vines planted in marl and sandstone soils in the Gramogliano hills along the Slovenian border. This may be enjoyable today but a few years of cellar will reveal even further depths."
