Vineyard Notes: The grapes are sourced from one plot of 80+-year-old vines in Rovittello, a village on the northern side of Mt. Etna in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes are traditionally vinified with long maceration of the must with the skins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in small casks (225 liters) for more than one year. Refining occurs in bottle for 8-10 months.

Tasting Notes: The Benanti Rovittello is plush and powerful. It is definitely a category benchmark for Mt. Etna. Flavors include but are not limited to cherry, currant, raspberry, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, various herbs, and minerals. Beautiful fruit and spice hit the whole palate in a harmonic complexity. Pair Rovittello with hearty dishes.

About the Label: The label is a painting that is featured in the Benanti tasting room in Sicily.

  • The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 91 (10/31/2018)

Tarry smoke and cured tobacco notes underscore the dried cherry, leather and spice flavors in this well-balanced, medium-bodied red, firmed by creamy tannins. Drink now through 2023.
  • Vinous
    Rating: 95+ (8/6/2019)

Brooding aromas and flavors hint at pencil shavings, red currant jelly, red cherry nectar, yellow flowers, coffee and herbs. Dense and tactile but also very fruity in the mouth, expressing a noteworthy steely quality. In fact, much more steely than the 2014 Serra della Contessa, and so less immediately juicy/fruity but rather more taut and classically austere at this present time of development. Ought to age splendidly. From very old vines grown at 750 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Etna.

    Rating: 94 (9/10/2019)

The well-established Benanti estate produces a wide range of wines, but this single-vineyard red is one of the best. The mostly centenarian vines lie on the northern slopes of Etna. The nose is vibrant and minty, with crunchy raspberry aromas. It's intense and very concentrated, with robust tannins that don't obscure the fine texture. Has energy and drive with very good length. Drink 2019-2030.

    Rating: 92 (12/28/2018)

This Etna field blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio is fermented in stainless steel with the ambient yeast and aged in large oak casks for 20 months. Fruit comes from a single vineyard on the east side of the volcano at 750 meters above sea level. The vines are planted on their original root stock. This precious wine offers an elegantly slimmed-down mouthfeel with polished tannins and fresh acidity. Wild cherry, licorice, tar and smoke appear on the close.
