Based in the village of Ratsch in Austria's Südsteiermark, Weingut Gross has been farming these steep hillside vineyards for generations, with family roots in the region dating back nearly 500 years. Today, Johannes and Martina Gross focus on some of South Styria's finest vineyard sites, including Nussberg, Sulz, and Perz, producing wines that capture the freshness and energy of this cool-climate region.
Certified organic beginning with the 2024 vintage, the estate farms low-yielding vineyards planted on limestone, marl, and volcanic soils. In the cellar, Johannes favors traditional methods, spontaneous fermentations, large neutral oak, and extended aging before release, allowing each wine to develop naturally while expressing its site. The result is a collection of precise, mineral-driven wines that showcase the remarkable terroirs of Südsteiermark and the Gross family's long commitment to thoughtful farming and patient winemaking.
