Vineyard Notes: Contrada Monte Serra is the monopole vineyard located right outside the Benanti winery in Viagrande. This bottling is sourced from the younger vines in the vineyard, located below the older vines (some 100+ years old and ungrafted) that go into the Serra della Contessa bottling. The vines are trained with the free standing bush (alberello) system. The climate is hilly, less humid than other areas, and rainy in the colder season, with good ventilation, influence from the Ionian Sea, and significant swings between day and night temperatures. Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested in late September and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 25°C in stainless steel vats, with a 20-day long maceration, using patented selected indigenous yeasts. The wine matures in used tonneaux of French oak for about 12 months and then in stainless steel tanks. It ages for approximately 6 months in the bottle before release. The wine is fined with 3 micron (no animal products).

Tasting Notes: The wine is ethereal and spicy with scents of red fruit.

93pts (2017 Vintage) Wine Advocate 10/17/2019
"In its second year now, the 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra is a slightly more fragile and subdued wine compared to its cousin from the Contrada Cavaliere. The floral impact of this wine leaves a lasting impression, and the quality of fruit veers toward wild berries and cranberries. There is a note of plush or succulent sweetness that seems very specific to this wine. The tannins are silky, and the wine is mid-weight in texture but noticeably long in persistence. This pure expression of Nerello Mascalese would pair nicely with fresh tuna and capers served with tomato sauce on pasta."

The 2018 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra takes some time to blow off an initial whiff of crushed stone and earth notes. Swirling brings forward woodland berries, hints of rose and wild herbs. This is soft-textured, savory and focused on purity, with a light-bodied frame and a lifted feel to its mineral-tinged red fruits. It finishes a bit short and lightly structured, with a hint of pomegranate lingering. Short-term cellaring may reveal further depths.

A pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, the Benanti 2018 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra is a punchy and fresh red wine with fruit from the village of Viagrande at 450 meters in altitude, considered high elevation anywhere else in Italy except on Etna. The fruit comes from a wide variety of vines, ranging from 13 to 100 years old. Some 6,000 bottles were released, and this wine was first made in 2016. The Monte Serra shows tart and lifted aromas of cassis and wild berry. The fruit is not very intense, but it delivers silky and delicate lines nonetheless.
