Vintage Notes by Wine Spectator 4/2021: "The classic 2016 vintage is the best harvest in two decades for Piedmont's top red."

Winemaking Notes: The estate’s traditional Barolo is a complex assemblage of various holdings, the proportions of which change slightly from vintage to vintage. Parcels are vinified and aged separately, with the final blend determined through tasting trials. As with all of their Barolo, fermentation occurs in cement without the addition of yeast, and aging takes place in huge oak botti of 65 to 85 hectoliters capacity. Elevage lasts 36 months. Blending occurs after malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined or filtered.

"The Figli Luigi Oddero 2017 Barolo is a steady and compact expression with lots of sharp and well-defined fruit sensations. The grapes are harvested across four sites and blended. Those vineyards are Rive in La Morra, Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto and both Baudana and Broglio in Serralunga d'Alba. As a result, you get the floral intensity and freshness of the first two crus and the structure and richness of the last two. All these elements balanced out quite nicely in this classic Barolo."

"The 2017 Barolo offers up soft, rounded notes of vanilla, peach candy, and raspberry leather, and emerging tannins come through its initial fruit impressions of dried strawberry, orange peel, and saline finish. Characterized by elegance and approachability, it will continue to develop over the next 15 years. Drink 2021-2036."

    Rating: 94+ (7/23/2020)

The Figli Luigi Oddero 2016 Barolo is a wine of enormous depth and character. It delivers the best of the Nebbiolo playlist with sultry dark fruit at its core followed by lifted or high-toned aromas of dark spice, licorice, candied orange peel and spent embers. The aromatic intensity of the wine is fitted to the underlying power and focused tightness of the mouthfeel. This classic Barolo represents a blend of fruit from four sites spread over three comuni: Rive in La Morra, Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto and both Baudana and Broglio in Serralunga d'Alba.

Perfumed berry, pine-forest, rose and menthol aromas mingle together on this fragrant, stunning red. It's classically crafted, full bodied and loaded with finesse, delivering juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, mint and star anise set against taut refined tannins. It's nicely balanced, with bright acidity and youthful tension. Drink 2022–2031.
