Vintage Notes: 2018 was a hot and wet vintage giving high sugar. The mild winter produced many healthy buds, some of which were lost in a late spring frost on the May 8th full moon. Fortunately, Wyncroft had kept an extra cane on each plant which provided the extra buds for a full crop. Summer temperatures remained on the cool side seldom getting above 85 degrees F. The vine is most efficient in this temperature range, and full phenolic maturity was achieved by late August, while acidity levels remained very high. Then in mid-September the vintage miracle happened. Two full weeks of 95 degrees and above occurred, which rapidly built sugars in the fruit before the acids could come down. The result was intensely flavored, fully ripe grapes with excellent crisp acidity. The early ripening Sauvignon Blanc easily reached 23.5% sugar while the slightly later Semillon moderated the potential alcohol. The crop was abundant and of very high quality.

Vineyard Notes: Dry farmed; no fertilizers

Winemaking Notes: The Marland Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend was made from 8 different clones of Sauvignon Blanc originating from Bordeaux and the Loire regions, and 2 different clones of Semillon planted at the LePage Estate in 2014. This is the third commercial white Bordeaux blend to be made in the state of Michigan—the Wyncroft 2013 Shou Blanc being the first. The wine was cold fermented with VL3 yeast to complete dryness and immediately racked off the yeast lees to capture freshness. It was cold stabilized over winter at 35 degrees F. Then it was filtered and bottled in February to bring the freshest aromas and flavors to the young wine.

Tasting Notes: The pale, greenish-straw color of this wine illuminates the piquant fragrant aromas of grapefruit, lemon grass, lime, white peach, and a hint of green fig from the Semillon. Reminiscent of classic Pessac-Leognan, the wine is bracing with a slight refreshing spritz on the entry. Intense fresh apple and citrus flavors are carried on a silky body that crescendos to a long finish. Drink this wine with fresh asparagus risotto, English peas and crab ravioli, soft cheeses, and pasta with basil pesto.
