Fruit Source: In 2010, the Ligniers purchased a third of a hectare of old vines (circa 1947) in this lieu-dit that sits just below the great premier cru Les Cailles in the southern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Tasting Notes: The 2014 is gorgeous, offering a lift and freshness not often seen in these more rugged environs, but with plenty of ripeness and concentration. It has that driving, pure-fruited energy that characterizes the best 2014s, and it should develop beautifully as it puts on some weight in the bottle.

Winemaking Notes: In the cellar, fermentation begins naturally, and the wine is never pumped—only gravity is employed when moving the wines. As his father did, Laurent allows the wine plenty of time in barrel to develop its distinctive personality and harmonize its elements, bottling after two full winters in the cellar at minimum, and after a full 24 months in most cases. The finished wine is the epitome of that classic Burgundian marriage of power and grace—both amazingly concentrated and layered yet utterly nuanced and transparent. Laurent has steered his father’s already meticulous vineyard practices in an even more rigorous direction, having eschewed the use of chemicals entirely, and working toward organic certification (to be awarded in 2018).

    Rating: 88-90 (1/15/2016)

Moderate reduction pushes what appears to be ripe fruit to the background. I like the sense of energy as well as the vibrancy and volume of the robust and relatively muscular flavors that culminate in a rustic but not hard finish. This is plainly going to need at least 6 to 8 years of cellar time to shed some structure.

    Rating: (90-92) (12/20/2015)

The 2014 Nuits St Georges les Poisets, which has been made at the domaine since 2010 and comes from vines planted in the 1950s that are often affected by millerandage, has a nicely detailed bouquet with pretty strawberry pastille and citrus lemon scents; there is also a touch of cold pond on a winter's day in the background (that image just sprang into my mind!). The palate is silky smooth on the entry, very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced red berry fruit with a slightly grainy texture on the harmonious finish. This is an excellent offering from Laurent Lignier.

(the Lignier have owned these 60+-year-old vines since 2010): Good deep red-ruby color. Wild, slightly reduced aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and game. Chewy and concentrated owing to the high percentage of millerandé grapes, with ripe dark fruit flavors framed and extended by spicy tannins. Production here was under 35 hectoliters per hectare, according to Laurent Lignier.
