Brooks 2006 WV Riesling
Country of Origin: USA
Location: McMinnville
People: Pascal Brooks, Owner | Janie Brooks-Hueck, Manager/Sister | Chris Williams, Winemaker

Brooks Wines was established in the fall of 1998. Winemaker Jimi Brooks developed his passion for winemaking while working for four years in the Beaujolais region of France for the Deschamps Family. In France, Jimi learned one of the most valuable lessons in winemaking, and one that stuck with him. He learned that the quality of any wine comes from the care taken in the vineyard. Later, Jimi returned to his home state of Oregon and began working at WillaKenzie Estates under the tutelagae of Laurent Montalieu. While at Willa kenzie, Jimi started his own label, Brooks Wines. He became the vineyard manager and winemaker for Maysara Estate Winery and grew his label to a 3,500 case production. Jimi was a strong advocate and practitioner of organic and biodynamic farming. By 2002, only organically farmed grapes were used to produce Brooks wines. Despite Jimi's passing, Brooks wines are still available, made by some of his best friends and winemaking colleagues. While new chapters for Brooks wines unveil, we will be steadily guided with the legacies Jimi left. His commitment to Oregon's landscape, especially the wine industry, and his dedication and excitement for future harvests was one of balance and respect.

The Momtazi Vineyard fruit and Eola Hills Vineyard fruit are farmed biodynamically.

Brooks wines are vegetarian. No egg or fish products are used.

Brooks 2007 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
Rating: 88

A much more elegant and admirably pure layered red Pinot fruit nose complements well the delicious, vibrant and equally pure light to middle weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of tension on the notably longer finish.

Here the nose is definitely more sauvage than that of the Janus as it has a gamey component to the ripe and more deeply pitched wild red berry fruit nose that leads to relatively fresh and lively moderately concentrated flavors that possess excellent depth and a distinct savory component on the dusty and sappy finish. Here again, provided that the serving temperature is kept sufficiently cool, this manages to carry its alcohol without undue warmth. I would suggest cellaring this for 2 to 5 years though with air, it could be approached now with pleasure.

Bright red. Fresh red berries, cherry and mocha on the nose. A suave floral quality comes up with air and carries onto the palate, adding complexity to the sweet raspberry and cherry flavors. Nervy acidity adds lift and cut to the long, spicy, focused finish.

Limpid red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, fresh rose, anise and Asian spices, along with a high-pitched minty nuance. Tight-grained and firmly built but in no way hard-edged, displaying lively red fruit and candied floral character and good tangy cut. Finishes with excellent spicy persistence and silky tannins, with the floral note repeating.

Brooks 2007 'Amycas' (White Blend), Oregon

Pale yellow. Peach, pear and melon aromas are brightened by notes of Meyer lemon and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied and juicy, with the orchard fruit flavors given a bitter edge and faint tartness by lemon pith and zest qualities. Finishes with good grip, cut and mineral firmness.

Brooks 2007 Riesling 'Ara,' Willamette Valley
Rating: 90

Light yellow with a green tint. Highly perfumed bouquet of citrus fruits, melon, honeysuckle, minerals and Moroccan spices. This is pretty exotic and complex, offering juicy melon and orange flavors and good mineral spine. An ample but energetic wine that finishes with excellent clarity and stony cut. Try it with Japanese seafood dishes.

Greenish-straw color. Precise aromas of lime zest, mint, minerals and white flowers. Denser and riper in the mouth, offering dry, refreshingly bitter quince and peach skin flavors and a subtle perfumed character. Finishes with a refreshingly dry edge and good mineral lift. This would work with raw oysters.

Light, bright red. Pungent aromas of redcurrant, cherry skin and dried flowers, with a subtle note of black tea adding depth. Tangy red fruits on the palate, with a zesty bite of orange zest on the back. Refreshing, slightly tart and focused on the finish, where the redcurrant and orange notes repeat. There's zero excess fat on these bones.

Deep red. Sexy aromas of red and dark berries, five-spice powder, cured tobacco and dried flowers. Supple black raspberry and cherry flavors stain the palate and gain weight with air. A tangy mineral quality adds focus and delineation to the long, sweet finish. I like this wine's balance and clarity.

Brooks 2006 Pinot Noir 'Janus', Willamette Valley
Rating: 91

A serious and brooding nose features freshly crushed wild berry, underbrush and earth notes that also characterize the rich, full and ripe medium plus weight flavors that offer good depth, the finish belies almost no trace of warmth that the reported alcohol figure might otherwise suggest. Delicious and age worthy. Definitely worth a look. - Allen Meadows

Brooks 2005 Pinot Noir 'Rastaban', Willamette Valley
Rating: 92

In depth and richness, this ambitious wine feels a bit unformed now. Scents of mulling spices, cardamom, and tar support a deep black cherry fruit flavor. For all its impressive weight the wine is elegant and supple, the flavors giving a savory, vinous feel. Cellar, then serve with duck confit.

Brooks 2006 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
Rating: 94

Lean, focused and beautifully composed, this gentle wine has a dark red cherry scent accented by pepper and carob spice. The texture is silky, the finish marked by fine acids and a faint spine of minerals. What it has above all is poise. It's an elegant package for breast of duck.

"...Rich and smoky, with powerful scents of bitter cherry, charred meat, graphite, iron, tobacco, fresh rose and mint. Wound up and concentrated... shows impressive energy on the finish... wild stuff, with suave persistent finishing flavors of rasberry and blackberry..."
