Raúl Pérez is one of Spain’s finest winemakers, and some wine trade veterans believe Raúl is among a handful of the best winemakers in the world. He is intensely driven to be the conduit of amazing wines. He believes that wine is made in the vineyard, and has an uncanny knack for knowing what his vineyards need to achieve their greatest potential. As Raúl Pérez’s great talent has become known, many winemakers in his village, throughout Spain and the world now seek to collaborate with Raúl. Everyone seems to want to know what Raul thinks, and if it means better wine, he is not afraid to say.
Born into the family who owns Bodegas Castro Ventosa, which is the largest owner of Mencía plantings in Bierzo (75 hectares), Raúl grew up at the winery developing his talent, passion and ideals. He left the winery in 2003 to start his own estate. The goal behind Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez is to showcase the forgotten indigenous grapes of a region. The wines are extremely limited, handcrafted, artisanal wines from varieties such as Albariño, Mencía, Bastardo, Prieto Picudo and Godello from the Northwestern DOs of Spain.
