Raúl Pérez is one of Spain’s finest winemakers, and some wine trade veterans believe Raúl is among a handful of the best winemakers in the world. He is intensely driven to be the conduit of amazing wines. He believes that wine is made in the vineyard, and has an uncanny knack for knowing what his vineyards need to achieve their greatest potential. As Raúl Pérez’s great talent has become known, many winemakers in his village, throughout Spain and the world now seek to collaborate with Raúl. Everyone seems to want to know what Raul thinks, and if it means better wine, he is not afraid to say.

Born into the family who owns Bodegas Castro Ventosa, which is the largest owner of Mencía plantings in Bierzo (75 hectares), Raúl grew up at the winery developing his talent, passion and ideals. He left the winery in 2003 to start his own estate. The goal behind Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez is to showcase the forgotten indigenous grapes of a region. The wines are extremely limited, handcrafted, artisanal wines from varieties such as Albariño, Mencía, Bastardo, Prieto Picudo and Godello from the Northwestern DOs of Spain.

    The one white in the Ultreia range is the 2013 Ultreia La Claudina, pure Godello aged in a 2,000-liter foudre for 24 months, and, as it was never refilled, it developed a thin veil of yeast almost from the beginning of the élevage. It resulted in a very exotic and aromatic wine, spicy, a little nutty, very fine and elegant, quite different from the earlier vintages. The color is quite pale and does not show any development or oxidation. The structure is quite light, the effect of the oak is almost imperceptible and the wine has great complexity. I really loved this 2013. This is an unusual vintage for Godello, which was harvested late and with a low alcohol level, which resulted in some austerity; it's lean rather than exuberant. Some 1,000 bottles were produced.

    Bright violet color. Smoked meat, cherry pit and redcurrant on the pungent, spice-tinged nose. Chewy and focused on the palate, with bitter cherry and cassis flavors unfolding slowly with aeration. Chewy tannins give shape to the persistent finish, where the smoke and cherry notes repeat strongly.

    It is very aromatic and balsamic, with notes of incense and spices. It is a bit tight and has great acidity, even a little citric. There's great tension here.

    Godello grown on sand, slowly fermented in 500-liter casks with no lees stirring. It also grows a veil of flor yeast in the spring. Nutty, with a very pure, saline palate - no gentle fruit here. It's an acquired taste, for sure, but altogether an original.

    The aromatic and open 2013 Ultreia St Jacques is pure Mencía, and as all the reds here, it fermented with full clusters fermented in oak. There are plenty of violets, aromas of orange peel, spices and some wild strawberries. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with great acidity and freshness; it is open, approachable and easy to drink. This is a bargain for the quality it delivers. I think this is a notch above the 2012. 15,000 bottles produced.
