Terroir: This wine represents an effort to capture the high elevation identity of the mountains of Monterrei. This white exhibits an elegance that is difficult to find among the wines tended in the lower valley of Monterrei. The grapes in the mountains are exposed to cooler night temperatures, which helps to make fresher, brighter wines that possess less alcohol. The quartz soil translates into great flavor definition. The vines are organically farmed and planted from 1970-1995.

Vinification: 50% whole clusters and 50% whole berries with no stems are cold macerated for 48 hours in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeast. Once fermentation is halfway complete, the wine is transferred to 3-year-old 500-liter French oak barrels to finish the fermentation. After 8-10 months in barrel, the wine is naturally decanted into stainless steel tanks where it stays for 4-6 months before being bottled without filtration.

Tasting Notes: The Muradella Blanco has deeply pitched aromas of peach pit, melon, honey and chamomile, with top notes of ginger and anise. Fleshy, palate-coating pear skin, pit fruit and citrus pith flavors show impressive energy and focus, with zesty minerality adding lift. It closes on a refreshingly bitter note, with excellent focus and lingering floral and licorice notes. This wine has a freshness and acidity that make it a great match with shellfish, deep sea fish, and chicken dishes prepared with Spanish, Latin and Pan-Asian spices. This wine's easy drinking nature also makes it a natural for casual tapas, small plates and sipping on its own.

Reviews

  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 94 (1/1/2015)

The white 2012 Muradella is pure Treixadura from 15 year old vines on clay and iron soils plus some grapes selected from older (25-30 years) vines on sandy granite soils with showy aromas of exotic spices, fennel, aniseed and mainly soil notes. It has a Chablis-like minerality, hinting on being saline. It has intense, piercing flavors, high pitched, very fresh and again mineral with some austere, herbal and spicy tones. This is simply superb. Ready to drink or to slowly develop in bottle. A pure, clean, mineral white at the quality helm of Galicia.
  • Vinous
    Rating: 93 (3/28/2019)

Displays intense aromas of pineapple, limoncello and jasmine picking up a strong, chalky mineral element with air. Dry, concentrated and nervy on the palate, offering densely packed citrus, tropical fruit and honeysuckle flavors that show excellent clarity and mineral cut. Finishes taut, stony and very long, showing impressive tension and lingering florality. (Aged in three-year old 500-liter French oak barrels.)
  • The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 93 (4/30/2019)

Features mature flavors of baked apple and dried herbs, but the acidity remains vibrant, with the lingering finish offering floral and mineral notes. Shows backbone, balance and character. Drink now through 2023.
