The glorious sweet wines of the Tokaj region are unique and recognized as among the best, if not THE best, in the world. In Tokaj, the rivers Bodrog and Tisza converge, which creates densely foggy mornings; the humidity is perfect for noble rot to thrive. Then, sunny and breezy afternoons shrivel the berries so much that they can't simply be pressed for juice. Traditionally, crushed aszú (pronounced AH-soo and the Hungarian word for shriveled botrytis grapes) measured in a wooden bucket called puttony are added to young wine to soak and ferment. The sweetness of the wine is then measured by how many puttonyos are added to the base wine.

The Kiralyudvar 6 Puttonyos Aszú sweet wine is crafted in the Tokaj region of Northeastern Hungary. Berries affected by botrytis are picked manually one by one. The aszú berries are then crushed and macerate with the must of ripe, non-botrytis grapes. The wine ages in 500-liter neutral Hungarian oak barrels approximately 24 months before release. The estate’s classic Aszú wine shows tremendous richness. Balance is maintained by knife-edged acidity. Fully enjoyable today with pastries and creamy cheeses, aszú will age nobly over decades with proper cellaring.
