Terroir Notes: Rocche di Castiglione is one of the most coveted crus in the appellation, and for good reason: its high-altitude (among the highest in Castiglione Faletto), white sand soils render a Barolo of dizzying perfume and supreme elegance. Brovia owns a 1.5-hectare parcel of southeast-facing vines at 350 meters altitude, and this is indeed always the most refined, lithe wine in their lineup.

Winemaking Notes: One cannot help but be struck by the stark simplicity of the cellar operations. As in the past, the fermentation starts with natural yeast in old, large concrete tanks. Fermentation can run as long as a month, after which the cru Barolos move to 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks for 24 months. This is followed by 18 months in steel and another long aging period in bottle. Bottling is done without fining or filtering. Furthermore, the Brovias employ no chemicals whatsoever in their vineyards, thereby putting them in a small minority in this exalted region.

Alex Sanchez makes memorable wines. His Brovia 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione hits close to home, as this vineyard in Castiglione Falletto is especially elegant and well managed. The wine shows pinpoint precision with small berry nuances, wildflower and crushed stone. The mineral signature adds beautiful focus.
