Teran/Terrano has been planted in the Carso region of Italy since Roman times. Teran has the most anthocyanins of any red grape variety in the world, and its alcohol levels rarely broach 12%. There is a certain Barbera-like quality to the crunchy, earth-tinged red fruits and the bright, appetizing acid profile, yet there is more finesse and purity. Fresh herbs and red licorice on the palate add complexity, and the concentration and energy of this wine is surprising given its exceedingly modest alcohol level.The Zidarich vineyards are entirely estate fruit, farmed without the use of chemicals and harvested by hand. All ferments are spontaneous, the wines are not fined or filtered and only the barest minimum of sulfur is used.

The 2016 Teran is dark and wild, making me think more of the Northern Rhone than Friuli, with a display of crushed stone, white pepper, blackberries and violets. It's silky yet lifted, riding a wiry frame of acids and salty minerals, as notes of black currant and savory spice saturate throughout. Fine tannins come in late, along with a rush of sour citrus and purple inner florals. It's a bit intimidating in this youthful state, yet the Zidarich Teran is full of potential.
