Tasting Notes: This is Les Lunes' forth vintage producing Barra Vineyard Chardonnay, and it only continues to get better as they learn more of what the vineyard is capable of and how best to make the wine. This old-vine, heritage clone selection of Chardonnay lends a density of flavor while maintaining freshness and brightness. Lots of citrus notes are paired with quince and apple, resulting in a deeply layered and drinkable wine.
Vineyard Notes: Barra Vineyard is a truly unique site nestled in the Redwood Valley of Mendocino County. The roots of these 49-year-old Chardonnay vines dig deeply into the soils in which they are planted. The red soils of Redwood Valley, a cooler climate compared to surrounding regions, make this an ideal region for growing white grape varieties. Highly deficient in organic matter, the moderately acidic soil pH allows for optimal nutrient uptake to allow the vines to thrive. The same family has owned and farmed Barra Vineyard for generations. The Barra family was farming their vineyards organically before the term even existed!
Vinification Notes: The Chardonnay was entirely harvested by hand. Whole clusters were pressed and allowed to ferment using only indigenous yeast and bacteria. The wine fermented in a mixture of neutral French oak barrels and tanks and aged sur lie. 14ppm SO2 was added to the wine prior to its gentle bottling via gravity in July of 2021.
