Benanti's 100% Nerello Cappuccio was born as a gesture of love for the Etna land and as cultural rediscovery of ancient flavors and emotions. It is one of the rare 100% Nerello Cappuccio wines produced, and Benanti has been making it steadily for many years, giving us the chance to know this grape better. Nerello Cappuccio is much fleshier and more immediately charming than Nerello Mascalese. Cabernet is to Merlot as Nerello Mascalese is to Nerello Cappuccio. Although its origin is unknown, the grape has always been present, in small percentages (15-20%) together with Nerello Mascalese, on Mount Etna.
Vineyard Notes: Contrada Cavaliere is on the southwest side of Mount Etna, within the municipality of Santa Maria Licodia. This contrada is known for its high elevation (2,950-3,100 feet), low rainfall rate, and abundant luminosity. Generally, the southern slopes are geologically younger, thanks to the formation of soils on relatively recent lava flows. However, this contrada occupies outcroppings with soils that are far older, the evolution of which has generated rather fine but complex soils. The vineyard floor has considerable physicochemical and biological fertility that benefits from a warmer and drier climate that is not tempered by sea breezes. The diurnal shift in temperature is dramatic at Contrada Cavaliere and helps in producing wines with with well-marked aromas and varietal structure. View Map
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are manually harvested in October and destemmed in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature, with a two weeks long maceration, using an indigenous yeast specifically selected in the vineyard by Benanti after years of direct experimentation. The wine matures exclusively in stainless steel for about 12 months and then ages in the bottle for about 6 months.
Tasting Notes: The wine is deep ruby with distinct violet nuances. Fine aromas of spices, herbs, smoke and delicate red fruit are met with a complementary palate that is dry and medium-bodied with satin tannins, pleasant acidity, and lingering, harmonious flavors of red fruit on the finish. This is a very versatile wine that can be paired with red meats, mature cheeses and elaborate meals based on fish or white meats.
