Aloxe-Corton is the weightlifter to Pernand’s runner. Always a bit more gritty, structured, and viscerally earthy than its neighbor, Aloxe-Corton can also take longer to come around in bottle. But the payoff is a wine of great substance and depth that tends to offer amazing value due to its relatively under-the-radar reputation. Rollin’s exceptional rendering of this appellation fits with their overall lineup in its precision and its mineral drive, but it shows the scrappier, more animal character of its birthplace. The family owns parcels in three Aloxe-Corton lieux-dits: Les Boutieres (planted 1957), Les Caillettes (planted 1959), and Les Guerets (planted 1978). This last-named parcel, classified as premier cru, provides the essential structure and depth of this cuvée.
Winemaking Notes: Harvesting is entirely by hand. The grapes are transported in small crates then carefully sorted at the cellar. The Pinot Noir is destemmed and gravity-fed to vat to maintain their integrity. After a pre-fermentation maceration for 5 to 6 days at 10°C, alcoholic fermentation starts off naturally at regulated temperature. During this period, daily tasting allows the operations of punching down and pumping over to be adjusted to the vintage. After two to three weeks in vat, the wines are housed in oak barrels (of which 25% new oak) for a period of 12 to 14 months. In barrel, malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in the spring. The wine is bottled the following winter without fining or filtering.
2018 Vintage Notes
Rosenthal: "The well-documented warmth of the 2018 growing season led to an unusual event at Rollin: a harvest that began in the month of August (on the 29th, to be precise). Although natural alcohol levels for Rollin’s 2018s approach 14%, they retain a sense of poise and tension—both a function of the house style and a reflection of the cooler orientation of their vineyard holdings; it is in vintages as extreme as 2018, after all, that the virtues of less solar microclimates are reflected most clearly. At Rollin, the 2018 whites show remarkable acidity in the context of the vintage, and the reds stay well clear of over-maturity and roasted notes."
Burghound: "The très sympa Rémi Rollin called 2018 a ‘very warm vintage that produced very rich, ripe and full-bodied wines that should drink well young but age well too. But the trick to this vintage was to harvest ripe fruit while preserving the freshness. We picked from the first of September and brought in yields that were slightly higher than what we obtained in 2017. Potential alcohols came in between 12.5 to 13.8% in pinot and 12.5 to 13.5% in chardonnay. We did have a few problems with fermentation stoppages, but we were able to get them back on track without any technical problems arising. I wouldn’t describe the 2018s as classic, but they are sure to be popular for their generosity and approachability.’ Rollin noted that his 2019 whites were bottled between July and November 2019."
