The Nuages is part of the J. Christopher terroir series. It is a selection of barrels from the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Nuages (French for “clouds”) pays homage to the moderating influence of Oregon’s autumn cloud cover, which slows ripening to allow for the long hang time that creates fully developed flavors. The wine is quite powerful even after 6 years aging. As Vinous states: "Delivers a solid punch but comes off energetic, even lithe, displaying smooth tannins and a resonating floral note on the persistent finish." The fruit is excellently balanced by the structure; expect it to age well for another decade or more!

Terroir Notes: The Chehalem Mountains reflect millions of years of soil accumulation, creating a rich geological experiment in one tightlypacked geographical area. Within this one region there are ancient, uplifted sedimentary seabeds, weathered rich red soils from lava flows down the Columbia River, and relatively new glacial sediment scoured from western states and blown onto north-facing hillsides from wind storms.

Vineyard Sources: Appassionata Vineyard, Lia’s Vineyard, Olenik Vineyard

Age of Vines: 6 to 21 years old
Vineyard Management: Sustainable; dry farmed
Harvest: Manual
Vinification: 100% destemmed; native yeasts; unforced malolactic fermentation; no fining; no filtering

Reviews

  • Vinous
    Rating: 91 (1/10/2018)

Ripe red berries, cherry pit, violet and woodsmoke on the pungent nose; mineral and white pepper flourishes add lift and urgency. Silky, sweet and nicely concentrated, offering black raspberry and cherry cola flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. Delivers a solid punch but comes off energetic, even lithe, displaying smooth tannins and a resonating floral note on the persistent finish.
