Susucaru Rosso (fka Contadino) is Frank’s field blend of mostly Nerello Mascalese (85%) with other local varieties from all of his old vine vineyards: Nerello Capuccio, Allicante Boushet, Minella Nera, and Minella Bianco. This wine is fragrant and structured with personality.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed before a 30-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks (2,500-7,000 liters). Wine is not fined. It is filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. SO2 additions can vary from 15 to 50 mg/l, added or not, depending on the quality of grapes and stability of the wine.

The first time you tilt a glass of the 2019 Susucaru, you can’t help but take a step back and ponder if this is wine or the freshest glass of pure cherry-berry juice that you’ve ever encountered. The bouquet wafts up like a basket of freshly picked fruits, with hints of stem and the dark earth that collected under your nails as you pulled them from the vine. It’s juicy, fleshy and round, but also full of lively acidity, as a mix of wildberries and subtle savory spice saturates, creating a tug of tension toward the close. The Susucaru tapers off, fully satisfying, lightly structured and persistent.
