Baron Filippo Cornacchia started growing Montepulciano vines at the end of the 19th century and is considered the pioneer in the aging and bottling of Montepulciano in Abruzzo.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are grown using certified organic practices. Harvest is manual and takes place in the first half of October. Maceration on the skins lasts for 5 to 6 days in a horizontal tank with a daily pump over. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel. Wine ages for 6 to 8 months in 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, followed by an additional 3 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes: A complex bouquet shows notes of cassis, plum, dark cherry, and herbs. This is a deep wine with tannins that fill the mouth and begs to be paired with meat. A thread of acidity harmonizes the wine's intensity. Finish is long and smooth. This is Italy in a glass!
90 Points (2018 Vintage) Vinous 4/6/2021
"The 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Casanova is dark and moody in the glass, slowly unveiling a bouquet of blackberries, wild blueberries, animal musk and hints of flowery undergrowth. This is silky in texture, and it comes across as quite elegant with polished black fruits, lavender and hints of exotic spice. Fine tannins and a hint of mocha lingers through the long and sweetly floral finish. There is a lot of immediate pleasure to be found here, yet the 2018 will also excel over short-term cellaring. Very nice."
