2018 Vintage Notes: 2018 was a rainy and wet vintage that produced a harvest of medium production, with good sugar and acidity balances. The 2018 vintage began with a drier and colder autumn than usual. With the arrival of winter, the rain also came. Spring continued to be very rainy; it rained 212 mm, which caused the recovery of the plant, a good vegetative growth and an abundance of fungi, especially mildew. In August, Raventós had the highest historical temperatures on the estate, reaching 104°F on 4 August, which caused the cycle to advance a day or so. During the harvest the temperature was rather cool with four days of rain. A very rigorous selection of grapes occurred in the vineyard.

Viticulture Notes: While this is certified organic, the Raventós go a bit further and practice biodynamic farming to create a balanced ecosystem. Vineyards have spontaneous plant covers, which gives biodiversity, fertility, and life to the soil. Manure from their animals is composted in winter. They use plant infusions as phytotherapy to minimize the use of copper and sulfur. They control Lobesia Botrana (grapevine moth) via sexual confusion.

Vinification Notes: Grapes are manually harvested with strict selection. They enter into the cellar by gravity. The grapes are slowly pressed at a low temperature. Static racking occurs at low temperatures. First fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeast in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, separating varieties and soil types. The wines are blended and bottles for secondary fermentation. The tirage sugar is organically certified cane sugar. The expedition liquor is the base wine of Blanc de Blancs 2018 with organic sugar. Raventós Blanc de Blancs ages for a minimum of 18 months in the bottle. Disgorgement date is indicated on the back label.

    This sparkling wine shows nice balance, with focused flavors of white currant, brioche, slivered almond and nectarine, underscored with a chalky minerality, and a fine, elegant mousse. Drink now through 2025.

    Pale, green-tinged yellow. Lively, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruits and succulent flowers on the nose, along with fennel and ginger accents that build as the wine stretches out. Sharply focused and lively on the palate, offering intense Meyer lemon, pear skin and honeysuckle flavors underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Shows impressive energy and minerally thrust on the finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity.

    Chamomile tea, pear and tropical fruit nose and palate, some woody undertones and a persistent finish. Nice balance and tension.
