Eneo is Montepeloso’s grand vin produced from Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Alicante and Malvasia Nera (biotype of Tempranillo).

Vine Age: Vines range between 9 and 22 years old.

Winemaking Notes: The fruit is manually harvested using small baskets. Grapes are 100% destemmed. The wine macerates for 14-22 days. Fermentation occurs in 1,500-liter and 3,000-liter steel tanks. The wine ages for 18 months in second and third passage French barrels and another 18 months in bottle before release. Malolactic fermentation occurs in French oak barrels. It is not filtered.

Tasting Notes: The Montepeloso Eneo is a gorgeously ripe and bold Tuscan red blend. Flavors of blueberry, dark cherry, cranberry, and shaved chocolate combine with velvety, soft tannins. There is also pronounced minerality accompanied by spice. Pair with grilled meat, aged cheeses and pasta.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous (3/2020): "The tasting was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Maremma. Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto and longtime winemaker Fabrizio Moltard have turned out a magnificent, thrilling set of wines. The 2016s are majestic, while the 2018s, which I tasted from tank, show how well warmer sites handled 2018...the wines have never been better."

The 2018 Eneo is pure and total class. Dark, resonant and super-expressive, the 2018 boasts terrific personality and class, with striking inner perfume that adds sweetness and aromatic intensity to a core of inky fruit. Lavender, mint, pine and sage are some of the many nuances that come alive with a bit of time in the glass. More than anything else, it is the wine's creaminess and overall feel that are so alluring today.

The 2018 Eneo, Montepeloso’s Montepulciano-based blend, is redolent of crushed red berry fruit, licorice, blood orange, star anise and rose petal. Bright and gracious, with terrific purity, the Eneo beautifully captures the understated, nuanced style of the year. It is a bit more red-toned than I recall from barrel. This is so nicely done.

The Montepeloso 2018 Eneo (a blend of 55% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, 15% Alicante and 5% Malvasia Nera) is another unexpected blend from this very promising estate on the Tuscan Coast. With 34,000 bottles made, this is the mid-entry cru wine. It offers a beautifully saturated color with thickness, fruity richness and nicely integrated tannins. It's a bit harder to dissect the various components in this blend, but that solo voice of Sangiovese does emerge with wild plum, potting earth and blue lilac. There is an extra point of acidity that also reminds me of the mighty Tuscan grape. This well-priced wine is worth seeking out.
