Vineyard Notes: The Cascina delle Rose Barbera d’Alba is sourced from vineyards on the border between Rio Sordo and Tre Stelle that were planted in 1997. The terrain is complex with a prevalence of layers. The blue marl soil is at a depth from 1 to 3 meters. Cascina delle Rose practices organic farming.

Winemaking Notes: Harvest is manual. Fermentation occurs naturally with native yeast. The skins are submersed during fermentation via pump overs. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. It ages around 15 months in traditional Slavonian oak casks of 10 and 20 hectoliters in size. The wine is not filtered or fined. Total sulfites are low around 40 mg/l.

Tasting Notes: The Cascina delle Rose Barbera d'Alba is bright and lively with red fruit and a hint of spice. Brisk acidity integrates well with the tannins to create a wonderful mouthfeel. Enjoy this dynamic red wine with on its own or with pizza, burgers, red meat dishes, and more.

Here is a comparably food-friendly red wine to pair with simple roast meats or risotto with wild mushrooms. The Cascina delle Rose 2018 Barbera d'Alba is an easier wine when contrasted with the Barbera d'Alba Superiore Donna Elena from 2017 that I also tasted in this report. Yet this wine does not show that jammy ripeness that you get in the Superiore and ultimately shows more balance as a result. There is some softness with dried blackberry and Morello cherry, but the cooler 2018 vintage manages those aromas with more precision and a softer touch.
