Winemaking Notes: The skins remain in contact with the must during fermentation, which that lasts between 25-30 days. Fermentation occurs naturally with native yeast. This is followed by a submerged cap maceration. After the alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation completes in the cellar at temperature of 20°C (68°F). The wine ages in large traditional Slavonian oak casks for 20 months and matures in the bottle for at least 8 months. No filtration or clarification before bottling.

The 2017 Barbaresco Rio Sordo offers a bit more tannic bite and greater energy than the Tre Stelle. Black cherry, licorice, lavender, cloves and menthol accents show a slightly darker side of Nebbiolo that is quite appealing. I would cellar the 2017 for another few years to help the tannins soften. Readers with classically leaning palates will likely prefer the Rio Sordo over the Tre Stelle. I am drawn to the wine’s energy, vibrancy and persistent finish.

Rio Sordo is a hilltop vineyard that starts along one of the most scenic drives in the comune, or village, of Barbaresco. The Cascina delle Rose 2017 Barbaresco Rio Sordo is filled with dark fruit and bold aromatic intensity, all carefully cultivated in this ridge line of vines. This wine is defined by a broad or all-encompassing approach. Perhaps this vintage doesn't have that nervous energy or electricity that you get in the cooler years, yet this Rio Sordo offers a very smooth and consistent mouthfeel that covers the palate with pretty Nebbiolo intensity. This is an accessible wine, perfect to enjoy in the near or medium term.

(Editors' Choice) Opening with enticing aromas of fragrant purple flowers, spiced cranberry and camphor with a whiff of new leather, this is an absolutely gorgeous wine. The delicious palate takes up where the nose leaves off, delivering juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and cinnamon. Polished tannins and fresh acidity keep it elegant and balanced. Drink 2022–2029.
