History: The first Isole e Olena Syrah vines were grafted onto old Canaiolo vines in 1984. The Syrah itself came from the Rhône Valley. Paolo De Marchi’s original intention was to use Syrah in his Chianti Classico blend, together with Sangiovese and Canaiolo. 1984 Chianti Classico DOCG regulations permitted the addition of 10% nontraditional grape varietiesand as a result, many producers used Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot in the blend. De Marchi was more interested in Syrah, and was so encouraged by the results that in 1987, he planted a new, two-hectare vineyard with Syrah clones from France, with increased density of planting. The Syrah was subsequently released as a varietal wine.

Vinification: The Isole e Olena estate now has three hectares of Syrah plantings. The grapes are 100% destemmed and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with a ten-day maceration on the skins. Delestage and pumping over take place once a day. The wine spends one year in barrel, of which 25% is new French and American oak. It is then bottled and aged for a minimum of 3 years before release. It is drinkable now with a very long life in the bottle.

Vintage Notes: Paolo only produces this wine in the best vintages. The 2017 bottling is the second since the 2011 vintage.

Isole e Olena 2017 Syrah is powerful, dense and savory. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon. Black cherry, plum, licorice, espresso, chocolate and leather build as this brooding Tuscan Syrah shows off its considerable character. The 2017 is a real powerhouse. Give it a few years in bottle.

Here's a hot vintage Syrah from the heart of Tuscany. The Isole e Olena 2017 Syrah Collezione Privata opens to dark fruit aromas with toasted spice and charred earth. The wine hints at the heat and dryness of the vintages, but instead of jammy aromas (because there are none of those here), it produces seared or scorched aromas. Indeed, there is a defined note of barbecue smoked or burnt meat that lingers through to the end. The wine is rather tempered and measured in the mouth, with linearity and fine tannic contours. A mere 4,480 bottles were made.
