For over 30 years, L’Ecole has built long term partnerships with the oldest and most proven vineyards, providing access to some of the best fruit in the Columbia Valley. With average vine age of more than 20 years, this wine shows a classic Cabernet Sauvignon profile of firm structure, integrated tannins and dark expressive fruit.

Vintage Notes: The 2017 vintage was moderate in heat units and produced spectacular quality and balance normally associated with such seasonal conditions. A cool, wet spring delayed bud break until early April creating some challenges in managing mildew and insect pressures, but also allowing the vines to fully recover from a hard prior winter. Bloom occurred in early June in line with the long-term average. July and early August were slightly warmer than normal suppressing berry growth and yields. Late September was cooler than normal and this combined stall in fruit maturation pushed most of grape harvest into October. A beautiful Indian summer October brought in plentiful sunshine, warm days, and cool night temperatures producing an ideal balance of flavor development, acid retention, and mineral notes in the majority of wines. A near-perfect vintage in the door.

Winemaking Notes: Each lot was hand harvested ripe and gently crushed into 1.5 and 5 ton stainless steel fermenters. Gentle handling of the fruit through hand punch downs and gravity assisted movements were utilized throughout the entire winemaking process. The wine was cleanly racked to 100% small oak barrels, 25% new, with five rackings over 22 months.

Tasting Notes: With an elegant, old world structure, this sophisticated Cabernet shows savory herbal aromas, lavender, and cocoa. A robust core of blueberry and plum with notes of black currant and cigar box are framed with polished tannins on a rich, harmonious finish.

92pts (2016 Vintage) Decanter 1/15/2020
"Along with Woodward Canyon and Leonetti, L'Ecole No. 41 (founded 1983) was a Walla Walla pioneer, today run by the third generation. This is L'Ecole's most modest Cabernet, with fruit from long-term contract growers as well as the estate Ferguson Vineyard. A robust structure and oaky frame plus generous cassis, mocha and inky mineral tones. Drink 2020-2027"

Plenty of cassis, damp earth, lead pencil, and leafy, tobacco-laced herbal notes emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley, which is medium to full-bodied and has beautiful purity, fine tannins, and a great finish. It's another Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon from this estate that can be drunk today or cellared for over a decade. The Columbia Valley release is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up all in French oak, 25% being new.

With a dense, dark-fruited core, the 2017 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of blackberry and cassis with an herbaceous undertone and soft dusty character. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a tight mouthfeel with grainy tannins that follow a condensed dark-fruit profile. Lingering with a tight tannic edge, subtle baking spices and bitter dark chocolate flavors remain on the finish.
