Winemaking Notes: This Crozes-Hermitage is produced from vines situated on a steep hillside vineyard, facing south-southwest, overlooking the village of Mercurol. It is a relatively recent acquisition by Bécheras (2006). The grapes are manually harvested, destemmed and fermented for about three weeks. The élevage is in demi-muids (400 to 600 liters). The wine is bottled after 18 months and is neither fined nor filtered. Annual production averages 1,200 bottles.
Tasting Notes: This Crozes-Hermitage offers plenty of peppery spice and pretty, small berry fruits in a medium-bodied, elegant, silky and lightly textured style.
About St-Joseph: St-Joseph is one of the Syrah strongholds of Northern Rhone (though it may include up to 10% Marsanne or Roussanne in the AOC blend). This large region is made up of more than 2,400 acres of vines and hugs the west bank of the Rhone River in a narrow band. Much of the wine is grown from old, terraced vineyards around the town of Tournon, just across the river from Hermitage. Thanks to east-facing vineyards that provide less sun and the influence of cool winds, the style of wine can vary from light and friendly to brooding and serious.
