The Claret is the Foley's flagship wine, produced from the best barrel selections. It is a classic Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
Vineyard Sources: The mountain vineyards (Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder) share a common denominator in structure – big firm shoulders, masculine tannins, but individual characteristics. Howell Mountain, at 2,000 feet, on the east side of Napa Valley, has extreme exposure, larger temperature swings, and volcanic soil, creating very firm tannins. Mount Veeder has geologically churned volcanic and ocean-floor soil. The Mount Veeder vineyard is nestled in a dense wild forest, which contributes exotic aromatics of menthol and spice in a slightly more refined interplay. Calistoga vineyards are hotter and earlier to ripen, which provide the mid-palate lushness of glycerin and higher alcohol.
Vinification: Ten-day fermentation, 20-month maturation in French oak barrels
Tasting Notes: The Foley Claret is full, rich and even across the palate. Black currant and cherry aromas marry with a hint of cedar in this elegant and seamless Cabernet-based blend. The complexity of flavors is carried across the palate in a silky texture, resolving in a lingering and gentle finish.
97pts (2014 Vintage) Jeb Dunnuck 1/31/2019
The inky colored 2014 Claret (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot) is the flagship of the estate and a winner that delivers everything you’d expect from Robert Foley and a great vintage. A beautiful perfume of ripe black fruits, chocolate, spicy oak, and violets all flow to a full-bodied wine that shows the charming, balanced style of the vintage to a T. Possessing silky tannins, considerable elegance, not a hard edge to be found, and a great finish, it, like most 2014s, is drinking brilliantly today yet has the balance and depth to keep for two decades or more."

"The 2016 Claret checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. Like the Merlot, it too is a mix of mountain and valley floor vineyards. Loads of ripe currants, violets, graphite, and chocolate emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This ripe, sexy 2016 can be drunk today or cellared for 15-20 years, if you’re so inclined. There are only 612 cases."
