2019 Vintage Notes: The January Polar Vortex destroyed the fruit buds in all of Berrien County, Wyncroft's usual source for this Cabernet Franc, leaving no alternative than to lean on their colleagues in northern Michigan for grapes. Luckily the icy winds missed the Traverse City area. The vintage was very cool, teaching patience. Wyncroft harvested several weeks later than normal—even picking grapes in the snows of November! It was worth the wait. Even though the grapes were lower in sugar, the skins were dark and thick. The flavors had no unripe green bell pepper.
Aging: 9 months in neutral french oak barrels
Tasting Notes: The Marland Cabernet Franc is more Loire in flavor than ripe Napa. It showcases dusty fruit with all the notes: crushed gravel, red plum, strawberry, and even hints of chili pepper. There is a good balance between the fruit and the medium body. It is best served at cellar temperature.
Food Pairing: Serve cool with charcuterie, grilled chicken thighs with a side of grilled sweet red peppers and onions, pizza, and liver pates on baguette. It also is delicious with cheesy pasta dishes and can go with nearly everything a Chianti would complement.
About the Name: Marland means "land near the lake" in Old English.
