Winemaking Notes: Vineyard work is done by the family. They do multiple leaf pickings and a green harvest. Fruit is 100% destemmed. Fermentation is done with indigenous yeast and the malo takes place in oak. Wine is aged 12 months in barrique (most 2nd & 3rd passage). Agostina Pieri Rosso di Montalcino is not fined or filtered.

About the Estate: All of the estate’s vineyards are Brunello-designated, including those used for the Rosso. This is one domaine that takes great pride in its Rosso, treating it much like the Brunello. Pieri is the only producer ever to earn Gambero Rosso’s prestigious Tre Bicchieri score for a "mere" Rosso di Montalcino. That wine, the 1995, caused a sensation with its amazing concentration and persistence— it easily outpaced most Brunellos and set a new benchmark for the appellation. And, always looking to push his wines further, Francesco has been collaborating with Fabrizio Moltard since the 2002 vintage. Together, they aim to enhance the expressive sense of place that a unique vineyard, and unique appellation, can produce.

    Rating: 90 (10/15/2020)

Light in color and extraction, the Agostina Pieri 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is a food-friendly, versatile and good-value wine that opens to a slightly tart and acidic flavor profile. It covers the basics of Sangiovese typicity. Cassis, white cherry and cranberry emerge from the bouquet, pulling along some aromas of chopped mint, licorice and crushed flowers along the way. This is exactly the wine you want next to a plate of cheesy ricotta-stuffed ravioli.
