History: As Paolo De Marchi started using less and less white grapes in the Chianti Classico blend, he decided to use the best Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes to increase the production for Vin Santo and to make a still white table wine from a blend of the remaining grapes. After a few attempts, he realized that the best wine was one produced from 100% Chardonnay, so grafted Chardonnay onto his existing white vines. 1987 was the first vintage for the Collezione Privata Chardonnay. In 1989, a new vineyard was planted with five different clones from Burgundy, which came in to full production with the 1994 harvest.

Vinification: The Isole e Olena Chardonnay is made in a more Burgundian style than most in Italy. It remains on the lees in 1/3 new oak barrels for 10 months (up to 12 months depending on the vintage). During the first six months the wines are stirred, in the Burgundian style.

The 2018 Chardonnay is so gorgeous. Lemon confit, white flowers, tangerine and apricot all grace this soft, beautifully polished Chardonnay from Isole e Olena. The 2018 is perfumed, gracious and incredibly expressive. It is also without question the finest Chardonnay made in Tuscany.

    Rating: 95 (9/30/2020)

The Isole e Olena 2018 Chardonnay Collezione Privata is a finely chiseled and precise expression. The wine benefits from cooler pre-harvest nighttime temperatures that have pushed aromas of apricot, waxy orchard fruit and sweet pear. The is a full-bodied white that remains remarkably light on its feet and lithe in character. This vintage achieves truly remarkable balance, and I don't say that lightly. Luscious primary fruit and toast are measured against the wine's racy acidity and its chalky finish. This is one of the best Chardonnays to be found in Tuscany.
