Terroir Notes: Almost all of Bernabeleva's vineyards are located along the Camino de Navaherreros. This essentially is their entry-level exploration into their terroir of Sierra de Gredos. All the fruit comes from old, head-trained vines in very small plots around the San Martín de Valdeiglesias area. San Martín de Valdeiglesias lies at the northwestern corner of the Viños de Madrid appellation in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range. Located at a high elevation, with deep sandy soils, it produces Garnacha wines unlike anywhere else in Spain.

Vineyard Notes: The estate vineyards are worked manually. The soil is tilled with contributions of manure produced by Bernabeleva's own cows. The only treatments used (only when absolutely necessary) are a dust of copper and sulfur. Pruning is done following the lunar cycle.

Winemaking Notes: Juice macerates for 25 days with some whole clusters. Fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel, concrete and large, neutral wood vats. After fermentation, the wine ages primarily in old wood vats. The wine is not fined or filtered before bottling.

Tasting Notes: Camino de Navaherreros is full of spicy raspberry and cherry and hints of rose petal on the nose. The palate is racy showing red fruit, spice, mineral, and brisk acidity. This is a beautiful expression of no-frills, old-vine Garnacha. Year in and year out this tiny boutique winery produces some of the most sought after Garnacha in the country.

    Rating: 90 (4/23/2020)

The young red 2018 Camino de Navaherreros comes from an extremely balanced vintage, when it rained when it was needed, the summer wasn't too warm and the wines turned out like a more complete version of the 2016s. To make a long story short, 2018 seems to be the finest Gredos vintage in the last few years, and that's quite evident in the Bernabeleva range, especially when tasted next to the 2017s. But there is no lack of ripeness here; the grapes ripened properly, and the wine has deep aromas and flavors, fine-grained tannins and some seriousness within its approachable style. A great vintage for Camino de Navaherreros.

Deep, glistening violet. Fresh cherry, black raspberry and floral pastille scents are complemented by hints of allspice and smoked meat. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering vibrant red and dark berry and candied lavender flavors that tighten up and become spicier with aeration. Closes sappy, gently chewy and very long, with sneaky tannins framing the wine's juicy fruit.
