Vineyard Notes: Pétalos Mencía is sourced from over 90 hectares of vineyards in Bierzo. 20% comes from estate fruit in and around the village of Corullón. The rest is purchased from 180+ families with whom they have a long-term relationship. The vines range in age from 40 to 90 years old and are planted at varying elevation and varying slope. There are 4% of white grapes in the blend and 3% of red grapes other than Mencía.
Winemaking Notes: The wine is vinified for immediate appeal, but it retains the estate's signature finesse and restraint. The vineyards are worked by hand and harvested by hand. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel and oak vats with 25 days of maceration where the wine underwent a slow three-month malolactic. It matured in barrel for 12 months. It is bottled without filtration or fining.
Vintage Notes by Wine Advocate 6/2020: "The Descendientes de J. Palacios wines from 2018 are the best collection they have produced since they set foot in Bierzo in 1999. And to understand my excitement, let me just summarize it as the best vintage ever of the most coherent, reliable and serious wine project in Spain. Simply breathtaking. Bravo!!"
Voted #35 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wine of 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"This savory red offers notes of espresso, black olive and graphite framing a core of black cherry and licorice. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity keep this balanced. Harmonious and graceful. Drink now through 2024."
