This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from ungrafted vines in contrada Zottorinoto, more specific in the section Chiusa Spagnola, situated lower in the valley floor. It is a bit hidden in an amphitheater surrounded by lava...very interesting parcel. Planted around 1925 at a lower altitude (620 meters asl), this unique vineyard produces a profound, tannic wine that is a bit Nebbiolo-ish compared to Frank’s other crus. The average vine age is 90+ years. 2017 is showing dried strawberries on the nose. There is ripe fruit on the palate plus excellent tannins. This is tasting young and could age for several years.

Vintage Notes: Overall 2017 was an excellent, dry vintage in Sicily. If you love Frank wines, then you should buy every bottle of this vintage!

Winemaking Notes: All of Frank's red wines are produced the same way. Grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed before a 60-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks (2,500-7,000 liters or 1,500-2,500 liters for crus). Wines are not fined. They are filtered before bottling with cartridges of 3-5 micron. Sulfite additions can vary from 0 to 30 mg/l. added depending on the quality of grapes and stability of the wine.

Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGT for the sake of uniformity.

Reviews

  • Vinous
    Rating: 94 (8/6/2019)

Licorice, fennel, black cherry, plum and smoke. Tactile and luscious with a sweet set of flavors similar to the aromas that are nicely framed by lovely acidity and polished tannins. Perhaps the most balanced and multifaceted of the Cornelissen single site wines in 2017. The CS on the label stands for Chiusa Spagnolo.
