Winemaker Notes: "I made a lot of Zin while working in Amador County, and when I started La Clarine, Zin was definitely not going to be a grape I wanted to work with. So, what change my mind? I had always had, deep in the back of my mind (the cobwebby part), an idea that a high altitude, whole cluster fermented, completely tank-aged Zin might taste pretty good 2018 would be the year I would blow the dust off this idea and try it out." - Hank Beckmeyer

Winemaking Notes: The Sumu Kaw Vineyard produces wines with stunning aromatics and great balance. The whole bunches were foot crushed and left to ferment spontaneously in open top bins. After about 10 days, the grapes were lightly pressed and racked to flextanks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Tasting Notes:
This is pure and delicious Zinfandel. It has aromas of spice, red fruits, crushed pepper, and a touch of earth. Medium-bodied, this red wine is very lively on the palate with forward fruit and fine grained tannins. The absence of oak aging really lets the fruit shine through. The low alcohol means you can pair the wine with a variety of foods from grilled meats and vegetables to pasta.

In his day job years back with a conventional producer, Hank vinified plenty of zinfandel, but this is the first he has made to his specific standards and aesthetics. This is whole cluster, raised in flextanks. The Suma Kaw fruit is peppery! The opposite of jam, with tarry underripe tannin, the second day the Suma Kaw comes out with that pomegranate fruit and some berry notes that slip just under the radar.
