Vintage Notes by Vinous 10/31/2019: "As was the case throughout California, the Santa Cruz Mountains experienced a mostly cool year until heat spikes arrived over Labor Day weekend. Very heavy rains over the winter and generally more moderate temperatures vis-à-vis other regions were to some extent mitigating factors. The Santa Cruz Mountains were not at all affected by the vicious fires that caused havoc further north in Sonoma and Napa.

Not surprisingly, producers had very different reactions to the heat. 'The heat was forecast,' Winemaker Nathan Kandler told me at Fogarty. 'The question was how much fruit we could get off before.' The most susceptible variety was Pinot Noir because of its thin skins and the proximity of the heat relative to harvest. Chardonnay, which has thicker, more resistant skins, and ripens later, generally fared better. Even so, Pinot and Chardonnay are lighter in 2017 than in more typical years. This is especially true of the Pinots, some of which are very light and suggest that plants shut down during the heat and/or some fruit was picked earlier than would have otherwise been optimal."

Winemaking Notes: This Chardonnay hails from the Santa Cruz Mountains, which is defined by a mountainous, maritime climate. The vineyards that produced this 2017 vintage were farmed using organic and biodynamic methods. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented using native yeast for primary and malolactic fermentation. Aging included 11 months in French oak, 20% new and an additional 7 months in tank.

    Rating: 88 (10/31/2019)

The 2017 Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains) is light on its feet, with lovely aromatic top notes and plenty of near to medium term appeal. Soft and nicely balanced, the 2017 shows plenty of character and nuance in a style that is all about grace.
  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 92 (2/6/2020)

The 2017 Chardonnay was aged a year in 20% new French oak barrels and an additional six months in stainless steel. It opens to aromas of toast and baklava—pistachio, honey and pastry—with notes of oats, Golden Delicious apple and baked quince. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and savory, lifted by citrusy accents and tangy acidity, finishing long, savory and textured. Yum!
