Vintage Notes: In 2017, higher than average rainfall brought the five year drought to an end. A cool and rainy winter tallied 30 inches of rain by the end of February. With March and April came sunshine and even more showers. A hotter than average summer made everyone very grateful for the previous winter’s rain. Harvest progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing red grapes to ripen gradually.

Winemaking Notes: After a careful sort, 85% of the clusters were destemmed and berries were then hand sorted. The grapes were fermented following a protocol of daily pigeage during an initial cold soak, then delestage and pump overs. 7% of the final blend was aged in new French oak, 76% puncheon and 24% barrique.

Tasting Notes: Since 2001, Villa Creek has been about blending. This year’s Willow Creek Cuvée combines three sites: Luna Matta, James Berry, and MAHA. This sexy beast is well appointed in its inky purple suit (think Prince in Purple Rain). The nose is intoxicating with plum, red fruits, wet limestone and local mountain herbs. Offering a generous portion of the above, it has a keen focus on the end game…to pair well with many types of cuisine and to make you look good when you bring it to a dinner party! This is a delicious wine that will make you happy. Drink 2019-2029

Also Grenache-dominated, the 2017 Willow Creek Cuvée checks in as 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that saw 30% stems and aging in 30% new barrels and puncheons. It's always slightly deeper colored than the Garnacha release and offers a great nose of pure black cherries, blackberries, singed cedar, ground pepper, and hints of chocolate. Beautifully textured, layered, and balanced, you can't go wrong with this cuvée, which will keep for upwards of a decade.

Musky, assertively perfumed dark berry, cherry and floral scents are accompanied by building spice and succulent herb accents. Appealingly sweet and lively on the palate, offering juicy blackberry, cherry cola, lavender pastille and allspice flavors that spread out steadily on the back half. Shows impressive depth as well as energy and finishes long, sappy and precise, with fine-grained tannins sneaking in late.
