Vintage Notes: Last September, nature was generous and offered Beaujolais a wonderful harvest. The 2018 vintage is juicy, with notes of crushed strawberry and fresh currant. The alcohol degree is naturally between 12 and 13.

Vineyard Notes: This is a new single vineyard Régnié cuvée for Antoine Sunier. The grapes are sourced from the 55-year-old Gamay parcel called Montmerond. The lieu-dit is certified organic and has a very specific terroir of rocks such as quartz, blue volcanic stone, and granite. It produces naturally concentrated wines.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes are vinified with indigenous yeast and no additives. Whole cluster carbonic maceration takes place for 8-15 days, followed by horizontal pressing and manual racking. The wine ages in 100% old Burgundy oak barrels (8 yrs old and older) for about 8 months with a SO2 addition between 10 and 20mg/L. The wine is not filtered or fined.

Aromas of rose petals, raspberries, cherries and woodsmoke introduce the 2018 Régnié Cuvée Montmerond, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that's pretty and elegant, with fine tannins and a livelier, more elegant profile than Sunier's superb regular Régnié. Incipiently complex and utterly charming, this is well worth seeking out. It's matured in used barrels.

Shimmering magenta. Vibrant, mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by hints of candied lavender, exotic spices and incense. Silky, pliant and alluringly sweet, offering palate-caressing raspberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that are given lift and focus by a spine of smoky minerality. Made in a pure, energetic style, showing solid finishing thrust, well-knit tannins and lingering florality. From what I've seen of the 2018s this is definitely one of the stars of the appellation in this vintage.

From certified organic vines, Sunier's 2018 Régnié Cuvée Montmerond confirms its superb showing last year, mingling aromas of cherries and blackberries with hints of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and enveloping, it's deep and multidimensional, with a cool core of fruit that entirely conceals its elegantly powdery tannins and lively balancing acids. This is worth a special effort to track down. Revisiting Sunier's 2018s with another year of bottle age (as his 2019s had yet to be bottled), they showed even better, and once again they're warmly recommended.
