Vineyard Notes: Grapes come from 45-year-old vines in the lieux-dits of les Forchets, le Potet, and Montmerond. They are currently in organic conversion.

Winemaking Notes: Wine is transferred to tanks by gravity. Only indigenous yeast are used. Whole cluster carbonic maceration takes place for 8-15 days, followed by horizontal pressing and manual racking. Wine is aged on its lees for 8 months in 90% neutral Burgundy barrels and 10% cement epoxy tanks. The wine is not fined or filtered. Only a small amount of sulfur is added at bottling (10 mg/l).

Tasting Notes: Raspberry and cherry show on the mineral-tinged nose along with herbs and lavender. While lively and mineral on the palate, there is also great structure sharpened by acidity. The flavors will continue to develop with age. Pair this Régnié Gamay with pork or eggplant dishes.

About Regnie: From Vinepair : "Elevated in 1988, Régnié is the youngest of the Beaujolais crus, and stylistically, it brings together the fresh fruit of Brouilly with a bit of the body and structure of Morgon. It’s supple but lively, with bright raspberry flavors and often a spicy note that makes it distinctive."

About Antoine Sunier: The younger brother of Julien Sunier, Antoine released his first vintage in 2014. Together, the Sunier brothers are two of Beaujolais' rising stars, Before setting up his own estate, he studied viticulture in Beaune and worked with the highly respected Jean-Paul Lapalu.

    Rating: 92 (8/30/2019)

The 2018 Régnié was bottled a mere two weeks before I tasted it, but it nonetheless bursts from the glass with expressive aromas of ripe berries, cherries, licorice and warm spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and supple, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a flavorful finish. This is a terrific cru Beaujolais that's well worth seeking out.

Deep ruby. Fresh dark berries, cherry pie, candied violet and a suggestion of smoky minerals on the assertively perfumed nose. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering juicy blueberry, cherry compote, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that slowly tighten up with air. Finishes sappy, smooth and very long, showing persistent florality and fine-grained tannins that rise up slowly.

The 2018 Régnié continues to perform brilliantly, soaring from the glass with a lovely bouquet of red berries, plums, Indian spices and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's deep and complete, displaying terrific energy and purity of fruit. Sunier has really excelled himself with this cuvée. Revisiting Sunier's 2018s with another year of bottle age (as his 2019s had yet to be bottled), they showed even better, and once again they're warmly recommended.
