Vineyard Notes: Domaine du Meix Foulot Mercurey Rouge is sourced from 10 different plots with vines averaging between 6 and 60 years. The vineyards are managed in as natural a manner as possible: no herbicides are used, and natural compost is applied when needed.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are destemmed. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeast in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts between 15 and 20 days. 40% of the wine is transferred to barrel and 60% to stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally with native bacteria in the winter or following spring. Then the wine is assembled and racked into barrel for roughly 15 months before release. Fining and filtering is only done when necessary.
Vintage Notes: The domaine's 2015s are rich and concentrated, but they also carry firm tannins, which may be the result of vines suffering in the very dry conditions that beset the Côte Chalonnaise: they're promising for the long haul." - Wine Advocate 7/31/2018
Tasting Notes: This crisp-fruited wine evokes strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. Age brings in notes of underbrush, spicy tobacco notes, and cocoa beans. In the mouth this wine is rich, full-bodied, and chewy. In its youth, the tannins of this wine lend it a mineral firmness.
88pts (2016 Vintage) Wine Advocate 7/31/2018
"Displaying aromas of ripe cherries, rich soil and grilled meat, the 2016 Mercurey is a supple, medium-bodied wine with a good core of fruit framed by fine but chalky tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chewy finish. It's a classic Mercurey Village that will drink well for a decade."
89pts (2017 Vintage) Wine Advocate 7/31/2019
"Aromas of smoky berry fruit, grilled meats and spices preface the 2017 Mercurey, a medium to full-bodied, velvety wine with supple tannins and an enveloping core of succulent fruit. This is already drinking well."
