Terroir: Ludovicus is produced from organically grown, dry-framed Garnacha grapes in the high elevation Terra Alta region. These high lands are located just 45 minutes south of Barcelona in the mountains of Tarragona overlooking the Mediterranean. Terra Alta neighbors the acclaimed Priorat region. The Garnachas that grow in Terra Alta are among the finest in Spain due to three factors: the elevation, the limestone soil and the plethora of old vines.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are picked and brought to the winery in the early morning hours. Bunches are destemmed and crushed. Fermentation occurs in 10,000-liter tanks. The juice macerates with the skins for 25 days. It is then racked to stainless steel for malolactic fermentation. Ludovicus ages for 4 months in 300-liter French and American oak barrels before bottling.
Tasting Notes: This mineral, spicy Mediterranean red drinks like a wine two times its price. Exotically perfumed bouquet shows dark fruit and flowers with spice and mineral nuances adding vibrancy. Ludovicus Garnacha is juicy, penetrating and intensely fruity, offering blackberry and cherry-cola flavors. It finishes long and smooth with building minerality and gentle tannins. This red wine is a real crowd-pleaser, and Ludovicus’s easy drinking nature makes it a versatile wine. Pair the wine with meat and pork courses or with more casual tapas or small plates. Of course, this wine is also a great sipper on its own.
