Winemaking Notes: After a careful cluster sort, 60% whole clusters were fermented in a concrete tank. The wine was aged in 500-liter French puncheons, 30% new.

Vintage Notes: Nearly 5 inches of rain in a warm December 2014 led to a cooler spring. A consistent pattern of rain threats through April sadly did not pan out. Cloud cover and cool temperatures helped preserve the little bit of rain received earlier in the season. These drought conditions combined with damaging spring frost and a cool windy spring led to much lower yields throughout the state. These same conditions however produced some intense and developed wines. The spectacular though limited 2015 vintage will be in high demand.

Tasting Notes: The oceanic and volcanic soils of the Edna Valley produce a totally different flavor profile than the rocky limestone hills of west Paso Robles. In the glass it is a deep, true red. Grilled blackberries on the nose lead to a palate of cola, anise and peppered meat. It is at once complex and decadent with an expansive palate. Delicious now but feel free to lay it down for a few years. The perfect pairing would involve game birds, black berry reduction, a wood fired grill and of course good friends!

    Rating: 94 (11/1/2017)

Expressive, spice-accented black and blue fruit liqueur, violet, licorice and mocha scents gain vivacity and pick up an olive tapenade nuance as the wine opens up. Densely packed but lively blackberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors deepen slowly with air and pick up a hint of bitter chocolate on the back half. Shows a suave blend of richness and energy and finishes with impressive, dark-fruit-driven persistence, a touch of vanilla and subtle tannic grip.

It offers a meaty, bloody, salty, Syrah-driven bouquet of blackberries, smoked game, olive tapenade and loads of pepper (white and black). This gives way to a rich, supple, unctuous Syrah that has full-bodied richness, sweet tannin, and a distinct meatiness/bloodiness that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s just another terrific, singular wine from this estate to enjoy anytime over the coming decade.
