Fruit Source: 10 different parcels within Mambrilla de Castrejón contribute to JC Vizcarra. The parcels are located in cool, high elevation sites in Ribera's Burgos district.

Vinification: Gravity is a critical component in Juan Carlos's winemaking. The gentle extraction helps him achieve a wine profile of elegance and finesse. The emphasis here is on the fruit rather than the tannins. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. The wine ages for fifteen months in French and American oak barrels, 50% new and 50% two years old.

Tasting Notes: With meaty, herbal, and earthy aromas, this wine has the typical soul of great Riberas. It drinks great young but can age for 15+ years. Pair this with lamb shank, roast beef, grilled steak and braised pork shoulder. For more casual fare, beef, lamb or bison burgers on the rare side are good matches.

92pts (2016 Vintage) The Wine Advocate 12/30/2019
"The 2016 JC Vizcarra is their Crianza-style bottling, even if they don't follow that classification and all wines are sold with a generic back label. It shows the bright side of 2016, a challenging year with rain and cold weather that resulted in fine wines with good freshness, fine tannins and, in this case, good integration of the oak and some red fruit intermixed with some floral notes and a spicy twist. The palate is medium-bodied, with clean flavors, focus and a modern profile, recognizable as Ribera del Duero."

  • The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 90 (4/30/2019)

Black olive, tar and tobacco notes give this red a savory character, while a cherry, plum and floral core emerges from the firm tannins and lingers on the bright finish. Drink now through 2030. 1,500 cases made, 800 imported.
  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 89 (8/31/2018)

The nose of the 2015 J C Vizcarra denotes unusual warmth, with plenty of Mediterranean herbs, including esparto grass, and an earthy touch. The palate shows better balance but moderate acidity.

    Rating: 92 (2/9/2021)

Expansive aromas of candied red fruits and pungent flowers pick up suggestions of spice cake, dark chocolate and smoky minerals with air. Juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter in the midpalate, and complementary hints of mocha and allspice appear on the back half. At once concentrated and energetic in style, finishing with impressive energy, chewy tannins and strong, spicy persistence. Raised in new and used French and American oak barrels.
