Vineyard Notes: This delicious red is a new wine from Benanti. It is produced from the Contrada Monte Serra, which is the monopole vineyard located right outside the winery in Viagrande. This bottling is sourced from the younger vines (12 years old) in the vineyard, located below the older vines that go into the Serra della Contessa bottling. The vines are trained with the free standing bush (“alberello”) system.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested in late September and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 25°C in stainless steel vats, with a 20-day long maceration, using patented selected indigenous yeasts. The wine matures in used tonneaux of French oak for about 12 months and then in stainless steel tanks. It ages for approximately 6 months in the bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: The wine is ethereal and spicy with scents of red fruit.

93pts (2017 Vintage) Wine Advocate 10/17/2019
"In its second year now, the 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra is a slightly more fragile and subdued wine compared to its cousin from the Contrada Cavaliere. The floral impact of this wine leaves a lasting impression, and the quality of fruit veers toward wild berries and cranberries. There is a note of plush or succulent sweetness that seems very specific to this wine. The tannins are silky, and the wine is mid-weight in texture but noticeably long in persistence. This pure expression of Nerello Mascalese would pair nicely with fresh tuna and capers served with tomato sauce on pasta."

    Rating: 91 (10/31/2018)

This elegant red is enlivened by bright acidity. An aromatic overtone of fragrant herb accents the wild cherry and dried cranberry fruit flavors. Long and creamy, with supple tannins and a streak of tar-tinged mineral emerging on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2026.
  • Vinous
    Rating: 92 (8/6/2019)

Captivating aromas of red cherry, red currant, minerals and quinine soar from the glass. Deeper, richer and flintier than the entry-level Etna Rosso from the same vintage, this offers lots of plump juicy red fruit and savory herb flavors. Closes long with repeating floral and red fruit notes. Made with Nerello Mascalese grapes growing on the south-eastern slopes of Etna in the Contrada Monte Serra. The Monte Serra terroir is one of the volcano's most interesting, but can suffer from drought in hot, dry years, though there was no such worry in 2016.

    Rating: 89 (12/28/2018)

The 2016 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra (with 6,000 bottles made) is a steady red wine from a vintage that delivered uneven results on Etna. This is a single-vineyard expression with fruit from the southeast side of Etna in the Contrada Monte Serra (Viagrande). Alberello (or head-pruned) vines are planted 500 meters above sea level, and although the age of the plants varies, they are 13 years old on average. The wine opens to a lean ruby appearance. Like other reds from this vintage, the mouthfeel offers medium intensity. It is slightly diluted in the mid-palate, but it could flesh out with more bottle time.
