Grape Source: The old-vine Mencia is sourced from about 1.5 hectares planted on terraced slopes composed of slate soil. The old vines are located around Chantada in the Lugo part of Ribeira Sacra. Xurxo Alba farms as naturally as possible.

Vinification: Fusco is fermented in stainless steel without any type of oak treatment. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeast. The wine is not fined or filtered.

About the Name: Fusco is a Galician word for night or darkness, but this wine is the exact opposite. It is bright and fresh. The name is attributed more so to the color of the wine as Fusco is the first red Xurxo Alba added to his collection of Albariños.

89pts (2018 Vintage) Wine Advocate 5/14/2020
"Showing ripe and grapey aromas, the 2018 Fusco is a very primary Mencía that was bottled unoaked to show the raw character of the grape. It's juicy, with berry and herb aromas and flavors, a soft texture and nice fruit."

Mostly from the Chantada zone in Ribeira Sacra, the 2017 Fusco fermented destemmed in stainless steel and was bottled completely unoaked. It saw a maceration of 20 to 25 days and was bottled after it spent the winter in stainless steel. It's very pleasant, fresh and easy to drink, but it's not banal and is more about the granite soils than the variety—simple, transparent, straightforward. A degree more sophisticated and deep than the 2015.
