Winemaker Notes: “Following our purchase of the vineyard in the spring, 2017 was the first year we had full control over farming at Evangelho. This wine, though possessing the characteristic suaveness of the site, does possess a trace more density than years past–likely due to the additional thinning passes we made. It was also an exceptional year for Mataro in a generally very strong year at the site, and the variety makes up over 30% of the blend. As such, this has some wonderful savory aromatics that balance and complicate the courtly fruit—upon opening a bottle of 2015 recently, I was struck by an exotic curry powder/garam masala note starting to come forth. Aged predominately in 600-gallon foudre and large format barrels, this wine saw very little new oak as we wanted the delicate complexities of the site to show.” - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Tasting Notes: Evangelho tends to have the finest tannins out of all the vineyard designate wines. The vineyard contains harsh winds that help retain the acidity. The result is a pretty wine.

About the Name: The word "heritage" on a Bedrock label signifies that the wine is produced as a field blend. All of the grapes get picked together at the same time and co-fermented together.

Distinctive, showing briary complexity, with deep and expressive smoky anise, black cherry, black olive and green peppercorn flavors that build toward refined tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane and Mataro. Drink now through 2026.

Another highlight of this range, the 2017 Evangelho Heritage Wine is a stunner. Fresh, vibrant and nuanced, it conveys a compelling sense of translucence, and retains elegance and finesse even with its distinctly super-ripe, racy feel. This is the first vintage in which Bedrock had complete control of farming during the entire year, and it shows in the positively brilliant 2017. Sadly, Bedrock lost 30% of the Carignan in 2017, so the blend is a bit different than in the past.
  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 92 (2/6/2020)

The 2017 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Wine comes from a dry-farmed vineyard planted in Delhi sandy soils in the 1890s to own-rooted Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignan and a few other scattered varieties. Medium ruby-purple, the Heritage opens with notes of saline, nectarine, rooibos tea and dried flowers with a core of wild berries and a crushed-stone hint. Medium-bodied, it offers intense, perfumed fruits with a sturdy frame of grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
