2015 Vintage Notes: 2015 was a year defined by extreme contrasts due to the Mediterranean climate. Autumn was hot and very damp (308 L/m2). Winter was cold with heavy snowfall on February 4th that left up to 10 cm of snow on some parts of the estate. Spring had a cool start with a night frost on April 9th that caused 5% of the Xarel-lo buds from la Vinya dels Fòssils to freeze as it is a north-facing vineyard. All of this combined with just 62 L/m2 of rainfall between January and July created some extreme conditions for the vegetative development; the varieties that adapted best to these conditions were Xarel-lo, Sumoll and Monastrell.

Winemaking Notes: The Xarel-lo grapes were carefully selected in the vineyard, even though the grapes were extremely healthy thanks to the heat and dry conditions that characterized this vintage. Once put into crates, they were taken straight to the press. Whole bunches were pressed to avoid oxidation and the get the best quality must. No additives were used including sulfites or yeast. Fermentation occurred at a controlled temperature of around 18ºC. The wine was bottled with 17.5 g/L of residual sugar to continue fermentation and create a wine from the ancestral method. It finished with around 3 bars of atmospheric pressure.

"There is a creamy note on the nose of the 2016 Ancestral Vinya del Mas that goes more in the line of the initial 2014. There are aromas of freshly baked apple pie and lemon rind, quite aromatic and attractive. But the main feature of this wine is its tasty, almost salty palate, as if the process amplifies the marine character and especially the flavors, with a combination of faintly bitter and slightly volatile characters. A nice and different expression of Xarel-lo."

    Compared to the 2014 I tasted next to it, the 2015 Ancestral Vinya del Mas has a lot more ripeness, less acidity and more evolution. There is also a lactic touch with some toffee notes and one degree more alcohol than the 2014. The palate is also mellower.
