Vinification: The Grüner Veltliner and Verdelho were harvested on the same day in late July. They were destemmed but not crushed and put into large stainless steel tanks; the weight of the grapes pressed the juice without any human intervention. The grapes were kept chilled and under CO2. After three days, the juice was drained; the yield was about 80% of the normal amount expected if a normal press had been used. About 3 weeks later, the super late-ripening Loureiro grape was harvested with low sugar. The same pressing was performed. The Loureiro juice fermented partially on its own and partially combined with the now fermented Grüner and Verdelho wine, so the whole wine could complete fermentation together. After about 6 weeks of lees contact, the wine was filtered to prevent malolactic fermentation. Bottling began on November 4.
Tasting Notes: The Loureiro grape is highly floral in a Muscat way, it but develops deep funky Chenin-like notes as a fermented wine. The 2014 Blowout was so successful in a charming way. The 2015 pushes the complexity and more adult-nature of this wine. Consequently, this vintage is darker, more saline, more minerally and even somewhat earthy and animal — though the wine remains charming and flattering in the mouth. The point of comparison is more serious Chablis than fun Prosecco.
